Add a RUNNING clock on HOME screen

I have, besides my IPhone 6, running IOS 10 now, an android phone. On it I have a widget that is a clock. It is allways running , even on power up, I dont not need to ever "Start it up", it is always running. It shows over my background picture amoung my app icons on my home screen. I can size it, position it, configure it.

I Would like very much to have this functionality on my IPhone. However, it seems, Apples idea of a widget is different than my idea of a widget. I installed a clock widget on my IPhone, but in order to have it running, Ihave to swipe right on the home screen, swipe up to find the widget and then start it. It occupies the entire screen, running as an application.

This is not what I want.

I want just the digits of a clock to be showing on my home screen (and maybe day, year, etc.. if wanted) just like I have on my android phone.

Is a Widget what I am looking for ?, Is this kind of functionality available on IOS ? (I would like this for my IPad as well)

Thanks for any help

iOS has never supported this type of functionality. If I remember correctly with my limited experience with Android, there is a home screen where you can put apps and widgets and then a separate place for just apps. In iOS, there is a clear separation. The home screen is for apps only and widgets are in the notification center. You can always send feedback to Apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
