How to capture HDMI via firewire into Mac

Would a basic HDMI to firewire adapter do it?

I would like to capture video recorded on my DVR. In the past, evertying I have ever captured has come in via camera/firewire.

This would be live video being played from the box so I would use Final Cut 7 via non controlable device. Do you think this will work?

Thank you in advance!!!!

Mac Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.1), 3.46GHz (5,1) 6 core (48G RAM 1333)

I think the FW-to-HDMI adapter goes the other direction, from FW to HDMI. Look up the adapter's specs and carefully try to decide if it is bi-directional. Don't think so. HDMI is a just a bunch of cables in a bundle with a fancy connector. You need a convertor that will break HDMI out to video and audio feeds and then a convertor that will encode the video and audio signals to firewire's data stream.

Your right- they don't even make adapters for this. They are all expensive clunky converter boxes. I tried running HDMI out the DVR box into my Canon Mark III and it didn't work. I think the HDMI ports on the Mark III are all out not in. 😟

I though of another converter box alternative might be if I can somehow find a DVD recorder that has HDMI in or even component in. Then capture the video off a burnt DVD. All of the DVD recorders I have only have HDMI out and I dont see any that advertised HDMI in. 😟

Anything HDMI out of the DVR will be encoded with copy protection. And only TVs have the decoder. Even if you buy an AJA or blackmagic design HDMI to USB capture device, it'll be scrambled. The only way to get video off the DVR unscrambled is via the RCA connections...Composite or Component (if your DVR has those). And those, unfortunately, are SD only signals.

Thank you. Great info here. I actually did this for a customer using the SuperVhs option and their agent didn’t like the quality.

Shane indicated that the component wouldn’t be scrambled. A lil more reading and I learned that HDMI/dig and component/analog resolutions are very similar.

I guess this brings me full circle but instead of HDMI into my Mac I can look for Component to Mac.

If the only options still mean I have to invest in an clumsy break out box I might continue searching for DVD recorder decks that can accommodate Component in. Then capture off the DVD disk into the Mac.

What do you think?
