When I connect my iPhone to my iMac, Photos opens up and reads all the pictures on my phone. It also opens iTunes automatically (which is ok). I can't seem to find a place to turn off the "auto open" in Photos. If I want to backup my photos, I'll open Photos manually.

And if you uncheck the option to copy your photos to the Photos library you will not have a copy of them in Photos and when you disconnect the device they are no longer be available - unchecking that option is a virtual guarantee that you will lose your photos and it has no effect at all on Photo opening when you connect your iPhone

Extremely bad recommendation? It'd solve his problem, his photos will import with iCloud anyways, plus it would stop the photos app from opening and I told him to follow your advice. You level 10 guys really need to get off your high horse sometimes. ***.

exactly my point - it has nothing to do with copying photos to the library and your answer has nothing to do with the original question - and even if it did your advice is very bad advice
The PO's question is only about Photos launching and auto-reading the IOS device for import - which your poor advice has no effect on at all as I originally stated

while it is connected in Photos in the source list uncheck the box to the right of the iPhone to open Photos when this device is connected
