after login an app is open. how to turn it off

When I start the mac and log in, a certain app is on screen (like in a start up folder in Windows) where can I find this and turn it off?

Is the app listed in System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> You -> Login Items?

Open system preferences > general check the box of close windows when closing an app .
