I have a number of animated GIFs on my MacBook but when I copy them into the folder I use for syncing photos to my iPhone they show up as stills on the device.
How do I get them to display correctly on my device?
I wish to be able to put them into a photo album and view them and send them in texts/emails.

The animated GIFs will appear static in Photos app, but when you send them to another device in iMessage, they will be animated.
If you want to view them animated, you can use one of the many animated GIF apps, I would recommend GIFwrapped app: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/gifwrapped/id782319880?mt=8
As far as transferring the pics goes, I sync with a cable and I get my photos onto the device just fine.
That's not a problem.
I will try sending one in an iMessage.
Are you saying it won't work on a regular SMS message?
As stated, animated GIFs will always appear static in Photos app.
Try sending in Messages app, they should be animted there.
If not, then you can send them to your device in email or Airdrop.
I'm not sure if iTunes sync maybe "optimizes" the animated gif to a static version of the image.
No that's not correct sending a GIF through iMessage or SMS/MMS will still work.
And other places that support GIFs such as Mail.
Remember in the Photos app they are not GIFs(still photos) once you send it will be.
Try sending yourself a iMessage with a GIF.

Currently the native iPhone Photos app does not show GIFs. But when you share it for example in a message it should still be a GIF.
