Since I need to retire for the evening, I'll give you a couple of other tests for you to try if, after you clean things up, it has not improved.

Log into another user account (set one up if you don't have one) and see if the problem persists. If so, then it's definitely something you have installed in your account.

Reboot into Safe Mode and see if it's any better. That will disable all but minimum OS and will also allow the system to rebuild it's caches and databases when you reboot in normal mode, in case they became corrupted for any reason.

You might also try reinstalling the latest update using the macOS 10.12.3 Combo Update.

Last resort would be to reinstall macOS Sierra if you have the installer on a separate drive and if not from the macOS Recovery drive. It will replace your OS without touching your user data or 3rd party apps, but beside you have a current backup before doing either of the last two installations.

Is this the 13" model? If so, it has a known issue with the hard drive cable going bad over time, and this could account for the slowness you are seeing. Replacement cables and instructions are available from PowerBook Medic and ifixit.

Do you have an external enclosure? If so, put your boot drive in it and see how your Mac works then. If a lot better even on USB, that would definitely point to a cable issue.

Do post the Etrecheck results macjack suggested as it will give a lot of useful information.

Good luck!

You have a lot of apps opening at login. For sure there is no reason to have ClamXav on that list (Sentry is OK) as it only needs to be open for manual scans and changing preferences. I suspect there are others that can just as easily be opened when you need them and quit when finished. Note that Skype is crashing.

DiskDrill from Cleverfiles was always giving me a hard time with newer OS versions, so I uninstalled it.

DivX has been problematic for some users. I have it installed without issue, but haven't used it in years.

Diagnostics are showing a several crashes that should not be happening, especially the two involving Spotlight (mds_stores) and cfprefsd (reads and writes preference files).

These Internet Plug-Ins shouldn't be slowing you down, but you probably don't need them:

- PepperFlashPlayer is built into Google Chrome and not used by any other browser that I know of.

- Why You Should Ditch Adobe Shockwave.

- Silverlight is out-of-date and probably a security risk (v5.1.50901.0 is current).

Glad you found it and you bring up an excellent point that we all missed.

There are a lot of bad cables out there these days. Some are just cheap forged rip-offs of "certified" brands being sold by everybody from Amazon on down. You didn't say what kind it was, but USB 3 cables and hubs are often subject to interference from WiFi, cordless phones, blue-tooth devices, microwaves, etc. that use the same 2.4 GHz band if they are not properly shielded. Other times, USB 2 cables are being passed off as USB 3 compatible when they aren't. Somewhat lesser problems arise with Thunderbolt and Lightening cables that aren't properly manufactured or are too long.

Buy from a trusted source and carefully read the technical specs.
