messages on mac will only send sms messages

I have been sending iMessages and sms messages on my mac air for a while with no problem. Today all of a sudden i can only send sms texts from my mac. I haven't altered any setting from when i could send iMessages to now. I can send everything from my phone both iMessages and sms, and they both sync to my computer. however when sending messages, from the messages app, i can only send sms texts. It tries to send the iMessage and then the red exclamation mark pops up and it says try again so i click try again and it automatically sends as an sms..... all i want is to be able to send Imessages again:) help please!

Hi,

On the Mac Sign Out of the Apple ID in use in the iMessages account.

Close Messages.

Re-open and then Add back the Apple ID.

Has this improved things ?

IF not start a New Message in the Mac Version and in the "TO" spot manually add your iPhone Number (You cannot pull it up by typing your Own name as it does not expect you to Call yourself so the My Card info does not show).

Type a messages and try to Send.

Does it show as being sent.

Does the bar get all the way across ?

Does it arrive on the iPhone ?

This may highlight that the Mac version is not fully logged in.

Open your Messages app. Use Messages' menu to go to Messages > Preferences > Accounts. Look at the left column and be certain the account you are using shown "iMessage" below the account name. If it does not, this is the source of your problem. You might consider deleting and re-adding the account.

it does say iMessage.... it still won't send i just responded from my phone and it sent in iMessage and synced with my computer, but when i replied through my computer it went back to sms...

Do you have "You can be reached for messages at" and "Start new messages from" set correctly on that same Preferences page?
