Setting up / using Apple TV 1st Gen.

Ok I found this !!! on Wikipaedia

"In September 2017, with the release of iTunes 12.7, it is no longer possible to sync and stream with the first generation Apple TV, although it is not listed in the iTunes update release notes"

I can state Apple TV 1st Gen works with current iTunes 12.6, there is nothing special to configure. I have two of them, one has been upgraded with a larger SSD drive that I use at a vacation home with no internet. Reset the ATV, perform the update, locate the General Settings and connect it to your iTunes library, note the 5 (?) digit code ATV generates and input it into iTunes, ATV will show up like a iPod/iPad does. Configure the sync options you want. Purchased HD movies (Star Wars and Rogue One are good examples) will sync and play on your ATV, but you need to uncheck the "Fullsize" download option from 1080P to 720P, the latter will play on the ATV. Keep plugging away at it.

I can confirm that iTunes 12.6 (I have 12.6.0.100) does work with 1st gen ATV. However until I disconnected my ATV from my iTunes library, then reconnected, iTunes failed to recognise the ATV after the update. Once I reconnected, the ATV showed up in iTunes and I was able to enter the code and the sync started.

On previous updates to iTunes the disconnect/reconnect step has not been necessary, so I've no idea why it was needed this time.

I just experienced this issue today and a few weeks ago it was working fine. It's a first gen too. It won't connect to iTunes and won't stream my shared libraries properly anymore. I've tried disconnecting, restarting, adding and re-adding my iTunes account with no success. Just seems to not respond anymore as it used to. Any suggestions?

Same here. Haven’t seen my 1st Gen Apple TV in iTunes for months after I removed the connection to iTunes. Tried to reconnect, but I don’t see the Apple TV listed as a device. I tried a direct Ethernet connection - same result. I’m going to try a factory reset, pull the router, modem, etc and keep my fingers crossed!

Thank you for that information. After 12.7, my iMac's name was no longer highlighted on the ATV1. I was I was just about to disconnect and reconnect my ATV1 which would have meant that I would have lost all of my photos, music and videos stored there. Where on Wikipedia did you find that information? Thanks again.

Here’s what I did. I reloaded a Mac air. It has iTunes 12.6 on I tunes. Made sure to prevent iTunes from UPDATIIG. Reloaded my music and movies. It’s syncs just fine. So now I can use my products. Screw you Apple! We will find a work around.

Reading lots of replies, if you found an Itunes computer running earlier than Itunes 12 (?), then /transfer/install your music etc it can still be a great storage device.

The Gen 1 was sensational for working musicians as you could store so many songs on it.

What have you actually done so far in order to try and set it up.

I Haven't set one up for a while, where exactly did you look for the code in iTunes, it's changed over the years.

IF I recall correctly, I've seen it in the devices list which is situated at the top of the window, but you should also be able to see the devices in the sidebar in the latest iTunes software.
