Disk Drill - incorrect partition name
I have an odd disk issue. I have an external 2TB Samsung M3 USB3 drive, I partitioned it into 2 equal partitions, named them ‘2TB-Data’ and ‘2TB-TimeMachine’. I then encrypted them both. The volume names and partition names are identical, i.e. the first partition is called ‘2TB-Data’ and it’s name is also ‘2TB-Data’. Any program/utility I use that can see partitions gets the information correct. So things like Disk Utility, Drive Genius, DiskWarrior, CCC, ChronoSync, MacOS, iDefrag, iPartition and numerous system info tools.
So far so good. Now, the problem, I installed Disk Drill by CleverFiles. But, when I list the disks/partitions it shows the M3 as:
The first partition on the M3 is not shown as ‘2TB-Data’ but as ‘Data03’. I have tried it on multiple Macs and get the same incorrect data. The original Mac does have a partition on a totally separate external disk that is called ‘Data03’, the others do not but the incorrect name persists. I have tried decrypting and re-encrypting the Samsung but nothing changes. The previous image is from the laptop which has an internal SSD and then just the Samsung M3 connected. ‘diskutil cs list’ shows the correct information. Also the main mac is running the latest version of Sierra, the laptop is running the latest version of El Capitain.
If I select the detailed info. from Disk Drill then it is consistently incorrect:
I raised it with Clever Files directly on the 6th of January, after some to/fro they got back to me today (9th Feb) and said:
‘Thank you. Please note that Disk Drill displays hardware disks and
logical drives (or volumes). Physical disks can be divided into
logical drives and volumes in which users can directly perform file
operations. Sometimes a logical drive may be spread over several
hardware disks, hence Fusion Drive. The purpose of logical drives is
to provide a contiguous storage area and free users from dealing with
complicated operations on multiple physical units. If Disk Drill
cannot scan a logical drive, it will try to scan the hardware disk.’
This doesn’t seem helpful or correct to me. My logical drives (partitions) do not span disks, they are both on one single physical unit. I don’t own a fusion drive. It isn’t a complicated operation on multiple units, it’s that Disk Drill can’t understand something and is getting the wrong name for a partition. Whether it’s logical or hardware all the other utilities manage it correctly.
It looks like a great app and I have used it to fix another drive successfully, my only issue is with the incorrect partition name which worries me!
Am I wrong, am I missing something? Has anyone seen this or have any suggestions?
Mark.
