iphone 6 connected to wifi but no internet

I am having a problem with my new iphone 6 (10.2.1). I can connect to my wifi but there is no internet connection. If I reboot the modem then I can connect but then my new laptop (HP Envy) cannot. When I reboot the modem again so the laptop works, then my phone no longer connect. I have figured out that whichever device is not working is being assigned an IP address beginning with 169 instead of 192. I tried setting a static IP address for my phone but it does not save the information and keeps trying to get an IP address from the modem. Any suggestions?

Hi

Follow the steps here, including contacting Apple Support, making a Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider if necessary:

Apple's recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points are detailed here:

IP address that starts with 169 is a self assigned IP. It's a sign that the devices (iPhone and laptop) are having problem getting an IP address from the DHCP server (possibly your modem/router). Make sure that you have the latest firmware on your modem/router. Also be sure that the DHCP server is set to a large enough subnet (typically 255.255.255.0) so it can lease more than 1 IP address to the devices.

The firmware is up to date and the subnet is set to 255.255.255.0. I do remember the laptop saying something about unable to get a valid ip address. We have several other devices connected as well (four other iphones, an ipad, our wifi television and our Directv box). I added the new iphone and the laptop on the same day I think. Could there be some kind of conflict? Or maybe I need to talk to our internet provider if the problem seems to be with the modem.

Hi. FWIW, modems and routers are different items. Some ISPs provide a combination modem/router (often called a gateway) and it does sound to me that this is the issue. Routers take a single IP address provided by your ISP and "share it" among various devices by using the DHCP. A router's DHCP can be configured to issue a limited number of internal IP addresses but by default this is usually in the range of 50 or so addresses. IMO your "gateway" is not configured properly. I would contact your ISP and get help in setting it according to their specifications.
