Edit label references for x-axis

Hi, how do I select a column as a label reference for the x-axis of a 2D line chart? Numbers automatically choses the header row of the table as the labelling for the x-Axis.

I am able to open the editor-box under Axis -> Category (X) -> Label References but my input does not get accepted (no prompting) and the chart keeps its default-labels.

Am I missing something? Is it a bug someone is able to reproduce?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Have you tried experienting with 'Plot Rows as Series' and 'Plot Columns as Series' (lower left corner after clicking the 'Edit Data References' rectangle)?

For "category" type charts (i.e. not x-y Scatter) it is important to define a Header Row (or Header Column).

The 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in your menu gives good examples you can study to achieve the effects you want.

Hi Eage,

Back to your original question:

how do I select a column as a label reference for the x-axis of a 2D line chart?

A 2D line chart is a Category Chart.

The labels (Categories) must be in a Header Column or a Header Row. In this example, Vegetable (Column A) contains the Categories.

The values must be in a Body Column or Body Row. In this example, Count (Column B) contains the Y values.

Row 1 is a Header Row and Cell B1 provides the title of the graph (chart).

Please reply with a screen shot of the relevant part of your data table.
