How to connect AirPods to MacBook Air

I cannot connect my AirPods to my MacBook Air. When I go into bluetooth, it shows the AirPods, but they are not connected. Opening the AirPod case in the vicinity of my computer does not make the connection, nor does clicking on the AirPods designation in the bluetooth. What am I missing? There seems to be no information anywhere.
