What does a cirle with a line through means?

MacBook pro 2010, tried to start up but get a prohibited sign?

It means the machine can't find a bootable disk.


The prohibitory symbol appears when the disk (that was seen and appeared to be bootable) is not bootable because some components required for Booting are missing or damaged.


So the disk is recognized, and can be accessed, and some components are present, but others are absent or damaged. The subtle distinction means the disk needs a re-install, but probably does not need to be replaced.
