How can I "rebuild my desktop"?

I have lost the thumbnail image from all but 1 of the .jpegs on my desktop. A long time ago, one could "rebuild the desktop" which would restore those images. I have no idea how to do it now and no idea what to ask for or look-up. If anyone remembers this option or knows what it's called today or knows how to accomplish this, I would appreciate some help.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), iPod, 3 iPads, iPhone all on IOS 10

I agree that losing the ability to perform things like a simple rebuilding of the desktop is frustrating when you want to tune-up your Mac.
Generic icons on the desktop could be a memory problem. I'd suggest getting as much as possible off the desktop,

or at least creating a folder to drop the icons into. Ultimately, a memory upgrade might be the answer.

I've read that repairing permissions helps. I've used Applejack in single user mode.

This takes you beneath the graphic user interface.

Ok, then how do I get those thumbnails to reappear in place of the generic document icons. Believe it or not, this is important to me. Also, believe it or not, 20+ years ago I was a Mac guru, who answered everyone's Mac questions at home and at work. Since retiring I've lost interest in staying on top of the various system mods.

I would still like a useable, non-insulting answer to my question.
