iPod Classic locked
Connected my iPod classic to friend's universal dock - played for awhile now locked. Screen is dark, won't turn on or off, and my PC doesn't recognize it when I plugged in and tried to sync it.

FYI - got the answer from 1-800-MYAPPLE. In case anyone else needs it - two options.
The Lock / Hold switch is on the bottom of the unit. Shows orange when locked. Start with unit in the unlock position. Switch to lock then back to unlock. Immediately hold the Menu and Play/Pause button simultaneously for 8 seconds. The iPod should rest and display the Apple logo and start back up.
If that combination of keys doesn't work. Follow the same sequence but hold down the Menu and Center (Select) button simultaneously for 8 seconds.
The second option worked for my unit. I'm back up and running.

No hold switch on the top of the unit. This is an older model iPod. Classic with a wheel on the front and a small toggle switch on the bottom to lock the unit on or off. It is turned on by holding down the bottom of the click wheel.
Okay, someone's gonna ask it, so I'll get it out of the way now...
Is the "hold" switch on top of the unit in the "off" position?
Glad you're up and running again. Wasn't trying to be a wise***... about a month ago, someone had the same issue, and it turns out the "hold" switch was the culprit. Your second option (which worked) is the general panacea for non-starting iPods... works kinda like a reboot.
