No sources in System Image Utility

I'm trying to create some NetInstall images of various OS X versions to use. I have all the OS X installers in the Applications folder, however, when I open System Image Utility, the first window that pops up, shows "No sources found" in the pull down menu. I've moved the installers to a different folder and specified for the app to look in that folder via the Preferences pane, still doesn't see anything. I've tried this on two different computers. Using System Image Utility v10.12. What am I missing?

You can only create 10.12 nbis with 10.12 SIU. If you want to create nbis for different OS versions you will need that version of SIU to create those nbis. In brief:

10.9 (Mavericks) SIU to create 10.9 nbis

10.10 (Yosemite) SIU to create 10.10 nbis

10.11 (El Capitan) SIU to create 10.11 nbis

and so on. Once created you can serve all the different nbi versions from one or multiple servers if you wish.

You've already downloaded them as they are part of the OS installer. You'll find SIU in the System Library folder. You install the OS on one mac, install it on another, TDM one to the another, use SIU to create your nbi and when done upload it to your netboot server. Do this in turn on the same two macs for every OS you wish to serve. There are other ways of doing this but your question relates to SIU and what I've offered should do the job.
