iCal icon date is always July 17

When I startup the icon for iCal shows Jul 17. If I open iCal it than changes to the correct date. Why Jul17, and how do I get it to show the current date on startup?

bboland,

You asked:

Apple Introduces iCal:
MACWORLD EXPO, NEW YORK— July 17, 2002—Apple® today introduced iCal, a new calendar program with built-in Internet sharing that lets business users, consumers and educators manage multiple calendars, share them over the Internet and automatically keep them updated.
As you noted the iCal Dock icon only displays the current date when iCal is open. It will continue to display the current date if iCal is hidden. If you always want the current date displayed, I recommend that you place iCal in your System Preferences...>Accounts>Login Items, and [ ✓] Hide.
