Changing email password on MacBook Air

I changed my email password but my MacBook Air would not accept the change.

I searched the internet and was advised that this was caused by a conflict with iCloud and that I should log out of iCloud, do the change and then log back in.

This worked but is there an easier way for next time?

I clicked Helpful and This solved my question by mistake. I thought I might get a 'Not Helpful' choice.

I had followed the instructions you have just sent me when I first tried to change the email password. When I clicked 'save' I got a pop up box telling me I could not save another SMTP account. I searched the web and found that others have also had this problem. Their fix was to log out of iCloud which I did, follow your instructions to change the email password which nowworked, and then log back into iCloud.

Perhaps my question should be twofold:

1. Why is having the iCloud email blocking the change of password?

2. Do I need the iCloud email for iCloud to work properly?

I'll try to explain.

1) iCloud email, as other iCloud services are all bound to your Apple ID. So if you want to change your iCloud email password, you'll need to change your Apple ID password, you can't change it separate, the iCloud email password can't be different than your Apple ID password.

2) No you don't need iCloud email to use the other iCloud services. If you don't want to use iCloud email, you can turn it off at System Preferences > iCloud

Hope I've explained it well this way?

It is difficult to get my point across: I have Mail and also iCloud email. It was the Mail password change that was being blocked and I had to log out of iCloud to allow the Mail password to be changed. This is what I was querying.

There is obviously a conflict within the system and I couldn't find out how to fix it using the Apple Community, etc. FYI I got the solution from http://solutionowl.com/mac-mail-account-already-exists-capitan/

My query was whether there was an easier way of changing the Mail password without logging out of iCloud.

However, if removing the iCloud email won't cause problems, then I will turn it off and hope that this will make things easier the next time I want to change my Mail password.
