Is this the original drive? If so, it's 9 years old and very long in the tooth. I'm surprised that SMART Utility didn't find anything given the persistent errors in Disk Utility. However, these disk utilities can only find the errors that they are designed to find, and if there is a problem the utility wasn't designed to find, the disk could still be on its way out. I saw this once with an iMac disk--it passed every test with flying colors, but one day it just disappeared.

Given that the drive is corrupt and cannot be repaired, the best thing to do is to replace it.

Good luck!

First, try running Disk Utility again and see if it can repair these errors. Sometimes it will take several tries to fix them.

Also, how old is your Mac and how old is the hard drive? If the drive is three years old or older, it could be starting to fail, and that might be why you are seeing these errors in Disk Utility. Try running SMART Utility on it:

SMART Utility seems to be somewhat more critical than Disk Utility, and may be able to detect impending drive failure sooner. There is a demo you can download and run several times for free.

If Disk Utility cannot repair the drive, possibly a stronger utility like Disk Warrior could. However, if the errors are occurring because the drive is failing, then replacing the drive is the only solution.

Good luck!

Inquired about replacing the drive. Apparently I have to get an entire new computer as it is no longer software compatible so can't do anymore OSX updates !

****.

Seems like such a waste of a resources / materials as everything else works fine.

Oh well

Think I'll get an iMac desktop this time as no need for portability nor the hefty price tag of a MacBook Pro 15 inch !

It's really had an amazing run and even more amazing that the hard drive lasted so long!

Given that there really doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it other than a bad hard drive and the fact that it cannot go past El Capitan, it still has the potential to be a useful computer for someone, maybe something like a first computer for a child. I hope you can find a good home for it if you elect not to keep it yourself as a spare. Not all that long ago, I gave a perfectly functional 12" PowerBook to a friend's young grandson, and even though it is even more obsolete than your Mac and cannot go beyond Leopard, it can still be used for going on line and email and writing school papers, and the grandson was absolutely thrilled to have his very own computer.

So maybe it won't have to go to waste after all.

Enjoy your new Mac, and happy computing!
