Macbook Pro still running when lid is closed

Hello,

I have the original retina MBP running 10.11 and is updated. I watch Youtube sometimes before I go to sleep and sometimes I would close the lid and Youtube is still playing because I can still hear it. When I open the lid, I would have to struggle to enter my password due to being groggy and dark since the keyboard aren't lit for some reason. Is there something I should turn off so that the laptop goes to sleep when I close it?

If an application inhibit sleep then it will keep going. Run Activity Monitor from the Utilities folder, click on the Energy tab and see if any of the running apps does that (fifth column).

Checked the Activity Monitor last night and there were none that said Yes on the Prevent Sleep column. Went to sleep and close the lid and the weird thing is, it will shut off the sound but then later, it will come back even with the lid closed. If I ignore it, it'll go away for awhile and then come back. I think it's possessed!

Check System Preferences / Energy Saver and either Wake for Network Access on the Power Adapter tab or the Enable Power Nap on either.

So did I, but after a few incidents when the Mac came out of the bag boiling hot and the battery near death, discovered it is not so. At least the newer post-Feline versions of the Activity Monitor acknowledge that and include the "Prevents Sleep" attribute column in the Energy listing (also a newcomer). You may be surprised.

Thanks for the reply but I would think that if you close the lid on the laptop, everything goes to sleep. I'll check that out when I get home.
