Mac is locking me out of iMessage

My Mac signed me out of iMessage, which is what I've been using temporarily since I lost my phone. Now that it asks me to sign back in, after typing in my passoword and email it responds by denying me access to iMessage even with the correct information. The message I'm given is "an error occurred during activation try again". I've tried about 10 times and am now screwed since I absolutely NEED to be able to message people for my college school work. Extremely frustrated. Please let me know my options.

I believe you provided a big clue to your issue:

So your iPhone is lost, presumably. Perhaps your iPhone's telephone number is therefore in never-never-land.

As you can see in this article in the "Set up iMessage" section, you are required to "Sign in with the same Apple ID that you use with Messages on your [i]Phone ...".
