I don't know if you have received an answer, and perhaps I will need to go to the Apple Store inconveniently. I have only had these for three days, but here' my initial take on them. Love the style, fit and comfort. On a windy day, people still cannot hear me talking, so the background dampening is not that great. It would appear that I may need to get a Mophie. Since purchasing the Pods, my phone has been going through battery quickly and heating up, like it would if there is a program running continuously. When they are in the case, the phone is fine, but when they are in my ears (ear insertion sensing is enabled), my iPhone 7 Plus will go through the battery in a matter of three hours, even if I am not talking on it. It also doesn't seem to have any method of hanging up, without touching the phone itself. As for the battery life with the Pods, Apple is correct, they will only last two hours when talking. I have not yet tested the life listening to music. I may need to keep my wired headset on me as a back up when I put the pods back in the case for recharging...which defeats traveling light. You cannot charge the case any faster with plugging it in using either of the Apple plugs...and at the moment, mine is stuck on 74% and no movement no matter what. Looks like I see an Apple Store visit in my future. Listening to music is okay, but clearly they have not used any of the Beats technology in these, because the base tone is weak. Pretty expensive for what I have experienced thus far. Bottom line is that I have the same problem that you have. I have shut off my phone and it stops, but it will drain it again as soon as I put them in my ears.

Yes! My airpods took my iPhone 7plus down 25% in just 1 hour. I had to purchase a battery case just to make it through the day. On my $30 Bluetooth headphones battery life didn’t change so I was surprised this new W1 chip drains power. I stream online radio all day at my desk job so I do have the convenience of charging during my use, but it is frustrating I prefer a wireless world. Checkout the Mophie cases they are nice.
Not inordinately on mine. Playing music and streaming to any Bluetooth headphone will use battery.
Depends on the files too. If streaming Hi-res files more power will be used than normal low res files.
