I am having this same issue, I just got an iPhone 7 Plus and it came with the lightning earpods. I have all of my music on my iPhone 6 still and I was planning to use it when I travel but when I plug these headphones into my 6, it does not work and the music plays through the speaker. When they are plugged into my 7 plus, they work perfectly. I also tried using my sisters headphones which are the same (lighting EarPods) and they won’t work for my phone either. Is there a solution to this problem???
You don't need to get the 3.5mm version if you don't want them, the lightning connector model will work with any device with such a connector that is running iOS 10. If you are not running iOS 10 you need to upgrade. If your EarPods are damaged take them back and exchange them. You might also want to get a flashlight and inspect the Lightning port on your iPhone 6. If you find a blockage/dust/debris/dead mouse/etc. use a toothpick and clean it out.
And yes you should update to 10.2.1, there are important security updates contained in it.

Based on the comments from others, my response above is incorrect. On the other hand, consider that using the Lightning connecter for sound doesn't provide any advantage. In fact, it prevents your from listening to music and charging the phone simultaneously unless you buy a clumsy adapter. The sound is no better and it may even be slightly worse because it goes through an additional step before reaching your ears.

I just updated and it still won't show the headphones it still plays through the regular speaker. I am about to clean out the charging port because my phone still charges perfectly.
But they said they still work, I received these as a gift, my phone is now on 10.2.1. Why doesn't it work? It doesn't say it is not compatible, but it just won't show up as headphones.
As long as you're running iOS 10, lighting EarPods should work!
Take them back to your local store.
I just tested them on my iPad with a lighting port and they worked. What could be the issue, how could I fix it on my phone to work??
Get a plastic toothpick and a flashlight and clean the Lightning connector on your iPhone 6
Lighting EarPods not compatible with iPhone 6
