iPad Pro mute isn't working

I have adjusted the volume on my new iPad Pro to "MUTE", yet I keep hearing all the special effect noises when I post/receive emoticons on Facebook Messenger. I thought mute meant no noises. My iPad keeps playing sounds at work and is getting very disruptive. I've had to plug earphones into the jack as a temporary solution.
