iDVD solution of keeping media linked

I have the last iDVD version available, v 7.1.2.

This is what I discovered:

I had created several iDVD movies previously when I had iPhoto. However, when iPhoto became Photos and when I had upgraded my OS X at the time, the source media lost its links to the iDVD movie project.

I then found the media again to a few of my projects and put them in a new folder which I set up in the same place where my iDVD projects are currently. I then dragged the media into the project again.

My iDVD movie projects work again as it did originally. However, then I tested it by moving the iDVD project with the new media folder to another external drive (to store it on another disc instead) and deleted my first copy in the other location I created it.

Now, the iDVD project doesn't work anymore and it says it lost the media. So, iDVD projects will only work if the original source media never leaves it original place it was used from? Is there another way I haven't found out?

Thank you~

If you have an iDVD project that's working archive the project before moving to another drive. That will copy the source files used in the project into the projects file/package.

I have archived my projects now into a separate drive.

If a photo, music, or video becomes deleted or moved (such as in Photos or in another drive) which was already archived with the iDVD project, will that media now be empty in the archived project also?

Ex:

2 photos copied from Photos into another folder in a different drive.

Then from that folder, those 2 photos were used in the iDVD project.

The iDVD project was finished and archived to another drive.

Later, one of the 2 photos becomes deleted in either the folder it was previously copied to or in Photos.

Will the archived iDVD project still have that deleted photo as part of the slideshow, or will it show empty?

Thank you~

I did a test iDVD project using three photos:

> The project was created in one drive with three photos from there.

> Then I archived the iDVD test project to another drive.

> After I archived it, I then deleted one of the photos permanently that was saved on my drive - and including the trash and Photos.

> I opened my test iDVD project (not the archived version) from that same drive. And it showed that missing photo as expected.

> But when I went to the archived project on the other drive that photo was still in the project.

> I did the same test individually with the two other photos in the same order and each time the photo (after it was permanently deleted everywhere), still appeared in the archived version.

Does not work perfectly, actually. Which is probably why iDVD is extinct.

If you go into the original iDVD test project and add a fourth photo, however, this will now create a second test iDVD archived project which will show the first three photos gone in the archived version. But the first archived project is still saved separately with the first three photos still intact.

An update from the last message...

Lastly, if more photos need to be added to the test iDVD project, don't go to the original iDVD project anymore. Obviously from there it won't work. But from the archived version it does work. I tested it and you need to go to the archived project to continue from there if more photos need to be added.

Then, make sure to do another archive version before deleting any new source photos. It will now create a second archived project with all four test photos in place.
