Is it possible to run Sierra and Mountain Lion on separate partitions/dual boot?

I want to be able to use my older software and use the internet with safety. Therefore, all I can see is to partition my hard drive and install Sierra in it's own partition. Is this possible? What problems will this cause, if any? It's an older macbook pro 2011.

Hello Niel, I created a partition on the SSD where I run Osx Lion and installed the last Osx Sierra. It worked perfectly but after I switched back to Lion for the first time the Partition is not appearing as a boot option.

It appears in Finder, Disk Utility. I have access to the folders, etc but I haven't find the way to boot in Sierra.

MBP Early 2011 here.

Any help you can give will be great
