I have Asurion. They said that Apple Care can be contact to run a self-test diagnostic on the
phone to make sure it is working OK. I am on iPhone 6 with iOS 10.2.1.
Does anyone know how to do this ?

Same here. I have been on the phone for the past theee weeks. Applecare said the battery needs to be replaced but when I got to the Genius Bar, they refused to replace it and want me to pay to replace the phone. Very frustrating

That means that the Apple store discovered that there was something in addition wrong with the phone, not just the battery. Or they found that unauthorized repairs had been made on the phone.
I called them because my iPhone 6 was shutting off randomly after the last update. They ran the " diagnostic and found nothing then asked if I wanted to pay $300 for a refurbished one. I don't think there test work.
