Why is BBC iPLayer blocked on my iMac (and not on my iPad)?

I watch BBC on iPLayer on my MacBook , operating on 10.12.3. I am using Safari as browser, but the same applies when I tried Chrome and Firefox. This used to be no problem. Now when I log into iPLayer, instead of pictures on the website I get blue question marks for each programme. No problem on my iPad and no problem receiving ITV hub and More 4. It seems there is some firewall or something specific to iPlayer. Any suggestions?

Those are just broken image links.

For whatever reason the images are not loading for you. It could be the VPN is too slow or failing to load the files. The site loads for me so I suspect your connection is failing to gather the assets in sufficient time. The desktop site probably loads different resources compared to the iOS versions or uses different content delivery networks.

I would reboot & double check that the VPN is actually in use (ipchicken.com will tell you there external IP).

Also confirm the order of network preferences in System Preferences > Network. The VPN should be at the top (unlock the Preferences and use the gear to 'set service order' to edit that order).

Then I'd consider emptying Safari's cache (Safari Menu). I see you have the develop menu active. You should check nothing is disabled there that shouldn't be active (like caches or images). You can also clear the cache in that menu.

You have a TV licence right?

Have you tried watching any videos? I suspect you will just see poor quality video if the connection is slow.

Thanks again Drew. There are several issues that I need to address. Yes I have tried watching videos on the iPlayer and none of them connect. I am looking at the network connection box. I seem to have 19 connections to the VPN, and I wondered if it might be a good idea to get rid of them I am not sure how to set about this as the - sign at the bottom is greyed out for all of them and I am not sure hoe to unlock the padlocks? I attacher a screen shot of what that window looks like.

Thanks again

I really don't understand Safari extensions but the only app there is Google Drive. I'm reluctant to remove that from there as I have a lot of important information on Google Dive and I don't know what happens if I remove an Extension?

Look at the report…

Safari Extensions:

AdBlock - Michael Gundlach - http://safariadblock.com (2013-02-08)

You have an adblocker extension installed - nothing to do with Google Drive. Extensions are pieces of javascript that alter how pages load in Safari. That seems highly possible that your issue could be connected.

Please open Safari's Preferences & disable them under the Extensions tab and retest the page in Safari. You can turn them back on just as quickly, ensure the extension is up to date in the Preferences.

maxwellbull wrote:

I'm afraid I don't understand your instructions in 'Go to Folder', I'm not clear what I type in after LaunchAgents/

In Finder you open the Go Menu and choose 'Go to Folder…'. In that dialog enter '~/Library/LaunchAgents/' (without the quotes). Click the Go button to open that location. Then you can remove the 2 failing launch agent that I mentioned earlier.

com.adobe.ARM…plist

com.apple.SafariBookmarksSyncer.plist

This brings me back to the question posed earlier in this conversation: is this something to do with the Sierra OS, and maybe I should try and revert to the previous OS (?Capitan). Thanks again for everybody's advice.

That's your call. If you think it will help & have a backup from 10.11 you could do that. Reverting OS's is not made easy by Apple & some updates make reverting impossible because the databases to certain apps are upgraded & made incompatible with the app version on older OS's (Photos, iTunes, iMovie, Contacts all use 'db based storage' that may not work on an older OS). That process may be more involved than you think.

You have narrowed it down to being a problem in Safari, if it is not the extension then it may be the plugins. You can also reset Safari to see if that alters anything, check the Safari menu for that.

Feb 23, 2017 11:34 AM in response to maxwellbull

My suspicion was the site was failing due to the VPN network settings - have you removed those 19 or so VNP interfaces? If you are not using them they can be deleted, I don't know why it wasn't an option for you. Please explain what service and/ or app you use to setup the VPN.

You could try another VNP provider or it may make sense to boot into recovery mode & use Safari (via at the 'get help online' part of recovery mode). Load the BBC & see if the images work. You won't be using the VPN or any of the potentially broken network interfaces.

About macOS Recovery - Apple Support

It won't fix anything but it is a data point that indicates that your OS may be the reason for it (or not if it also fails).

Feb 25, 2017 2:44 AM in response to maxwellbull

I'd start by removing all of those network interfaces, did you manage to change those? Enable your VPN & the interface should have a green indicator - just delete the others, they may be leftover from older settings.

Some other things to rule out different parts of the OS…

Safe mode…

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

That disables third party add ons & some Apple extensions too. Test as much as possible but be aware that safe mode is quite limited, so some features may not work at all, just reboot to return to normal, the next boot is often slower, so don't be concerned by a progress bar etc. The VPN (or even networking) might not work in that mode.

Try another user account…

Create one in System Preferences > Users & groups. Login as that user & see if it loads correctly. If it does then you know your user account may be the problem.

Disable login items…

Similar to safe mode you can disable 'user login items' in your account. Logout, enter your password to login but hold shift as you press the login button. Keep it held until the Desktop is active. If that works you know a login item is probably the cause of the issue.

Post the results of those tests then if you have no real leads consider posting an etrecheck report - it will show what is installed, it may give us something to go on, I suspect you have a config issue that may not show on an etrecheck report.

Feb 25, 2017 6:42 AM in response to Drew Reece

Well, here we go. First of all the iPlayer website loaded properly when I created another admin and logged in as the new admin. programmes downloaded as in recovery mode, but did nor try to connect as I had problems logging on to my VPN in new admin (but could probably do if needed). I would hope the problem can be solved without having to resort to new admin login as it felt like operating on a new computer with a lot of unfamiliar features and odd idiosyncrasies (e.g. bottom app bar is there permanently rather than only when you move cursor to bottom of screen)

I Meant to mention it earlier, but I managed to remove the extra network interfaces a few days ago. The green button shows on the WiFi logo and this does not change when I connect with VPN.

I disabled all login items when in safe mode but this made no difference to the problem. After only replacing my VPN and google drive login, the internet connection did not work until it seemed to resolve spontaneously while I was in assist mode in system preferences

Finally I ran etresoft check and post result below, I hope. The only action I have taken is to remove adblock as advised. I didn't understand the other red lighted info.

Thanks again for your input;

Disable any browser extensions & retest. Safari has those listed in the Preferences.

Also if you have Flash Player installed check that it is up to date. It should be a preference pane in System Preferences, or visit https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Can you post a screenshot of the blue boxes? cmd+shift+4, then drag over the area to capture. Post the image via the camera icon on these forms.

Lanny, if you have a better idea where this post should go just request it to be moved as your user level allows, nagging a new member helps nobody. Considering how badly this site arranges categories on the initial form it easy to see why it is easy to choose an inappropriate topic.

Hello Drew. Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately didn't help. BUT afraid I had a senior moment yesterday! Mine is a MacBook pro, operating on Sierra 10.12.3. As you kindly pointed out, I am completely new to these forums and very naive about finding my way about the website. Perhaps you could advise me; should I restart my posting and purring it on the MacBook Pro section? I am not helped by the apparent maintenance being done to the site which has made it inaccessible quite a lot this past 24 hours

Feb 19, 2017 8:33 AM in response to maxwellbull

Your issue is not probably specific to the model of Mac that you are using. It may not even be specific with the version of OS X that you are using.

That being said, the forum areas for Sierra and MacBook Pro have far more visitors (note the reply dates in each) that the one for MacBook.

The other issue is that the BBC iPlayer has never worked very well, if at all, for me because I live in the USA, and the BBC seems to block most of its content for me.

Your best bet, in the long run, may be to seek help on a BBC web site, or Google.

Feb 19, 2017 12:24 PM in response to maxwellbull

Can you post a screenshot? It will allow us to see what you may be missing. Occasionally it can help work out what is different for you, some people are not in the colonies & can see stuff that is outside of the US 🙂

I don't think moving forums will help, this site is a mess anyway as most users don't know where things should be organised. Frankly I don't know where this post should be either (Sierra, Safari?). I asked the hosts to move it for what it is worth. Frankly Lanny should have done that already instead of creating a problem that you do not have the permissions to fix, where I live we call it consideration.

Drew,

And, just where do you suggest that I put it? Which is the main reason that I didn't have it moved.

Concentrate on helping the OP instead of nit-picking the issue with me. There are obviously more popular forum areas than this one, where the OP's issue would have greater visibility, and you also have the ability to suggest that it be relocated.

Feb 19, 2017 2:55 PM in response to maxwellbull

Hello Maxwellbull.

I have an old iMac running Snow Leopard. Just out of curiosity I checked BBC iPlayer out and found no problems by just going into it via Google. Of course, your location is a major matter and a TV license another. I'm not sure how they monitor the license but that's another matter.

While I do know the BBC block many programs from people outside of the UK, that is largely a matter of copyright, but for people operating within the UK, the BBC do go out of their way to help in my experience. What have you done in terms of approaching them?

Feb 19, 2017 3:00 PM in response to seventy one

Thanks seventy one. I do actually have a BBC TV license, and the fact that the VPN allows me to receive iPlayer on my Ipad is an indication that it is not blocked through this VPN. IF I can't get this sorted before my return to UK in a couple of weeks, I shall take my MacBook Pro with me and see if the problem persists, when I shall certainly approach the BBC.

Why is BBC iPLayer blocked on my iMac (and not on my iPad)?
