Email hacked...virus..in a Mac?

My address book was hacked, (thought it was just gmail until I had found the same problems with

an old aol account I rarely use.) So I now realize it's system wide.

I have an iMac running El Capitan.

My "replies" from people, when there are multiple recipients aren't all coming back.

I'll send to 7, get back, perhaps 2 replies. Everyone get's the email, everyone replies, no one gets bounce back messages.

With single recipients seems to work, (in tests) but I can't be totally sure as volume does seem low in my inbox.

WHAT I'VE DONE

1. Apple helped me by running malwarebytes.

2. All filters, spam folders, settings readjusted. (Which may have solved aol, gmail issue still at large)

3. Changed all passwords, added 2-step verification

There IS no support at gmail, other than robot replies to cries for help.

HAS ANYONE HAD THIS ISSUE? ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Change your Gmail (and any other E-mail accounts) password to something extremely secure. Also, it may be wise to get yourself a password manager (such as 1Password) that allows you to manage all the passwords you likely have.

By the way, there are zero viruses for Mac OS. What likely happened is you have a relatively simple password that you use for many accounts and someone figured it out.

First, do not reveal any private info here - it is too dangerous in any open online forum.

Second, email addresses are bought and sold by the thousands daily; it is a "business". So, your email address(es) may have been obtained from somewhere else. There isn't much you can do except change your passwords. If the problem becomes too annoying, delete that email account and create a new one with a very difficult password.

Not sure what you mean by this:

no one gets bounce back messages.

Mail app has not offered a bounce back option for some time; it was never a good idea since that bounced email told the sender that he had sent it to a real "live" and usable address.

Sending you a reply which does not arrive has nothing to do with your Mail app - it is ruled by the sending or receiving server; in other words: their ISP/email provider or yours. Have you checked with your ISP or online email provider? And have you asked your friends to check with theirs? Those servers may have filters which detected a spam email and "confiscated" it = not delivering it. Using your email address as a "from" address will usually still show where the email actually originated, so that might be another explanation.

Babowa,

Let me make sure I'm understanding your reply.

Are you suggesting that when my friends hit "reply," AT THAT POINT, their spam filter from their ISP or mail provider is "confiscating" that same reply? An outgoing reply, not the email I sent them?

I didn't know that was possible, and I will ask them to check immediately.

To make sure I'm giving you the info you need to analyze in this specific case, let me summarize:

1. There are 7 guys. With checking I've determined that ALL 7 have gotten ALL my emails and have replied EVERY TIME, (sometimes multiple times when I call them and ask.)

2. Of the 7 guys, DIFFERENT ones get through each week. The guy that didn't get through once got through this week. Another guy who had no problem last week can't get through. Never have I gotten all 7 responses

3. None of THEM has gotten a mailer:daemon or similar notice.

Obviously, it could be unrelated, but it seems too coincidental that this happened to my aol account, and gmail account the day I discovered that I had been hacked and everyone in my address book was receiving unwanted solicitations.

AOL has been fixed. They have live support. Hackers had inserted things in spam filter.

GMAIL still doesn't work. All filters, spam settings, on my end, have been checked. They have no support.

Any other thoughts? Do you know if I can "reboot" a gmail account, delete it and startup with the same name?

I'm just about ready after a month to move to a NEW name anyway.

Hi Dana,

What all 3rd party extentions are you running?

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.
