I appreciate your response though it's not the answer I was looking for. I think this is something Apple needs to work on. I won't buy anymore iPads until there is a way to connect some kind of external storage device. This is a security issue for me. I don't like leaving files on my devices or in iCloud, those things are not secure enough. I don't think I'm alone about this.

There are external drives that work with iPads. They just aren't USB.

Many external drive manufacturers make wireless drives that work with an iPad through an app.

Apple designed the iOS devices with security in mind. They are some of the more secure devices around.

Any files on an iPad are by nature encrypted and inaccessible without the passcode or Touch ID used to secure the iPad. I doubt Apple would compromise that security to allow a connection to a USB drive which would be inherently less secure.

File's on an iOS device are many times safer than on just an external drive. Though backups are always a good thing to have:

I have a wireless drive that is awful to use. User manuals, software, and/or tech support are terrible. The drive is several years old so maybe there are newer ones that are easier. I see there is a SanDisk 200GB wireless available in the Apple store. I may research that.

On another note concerning security and the ICloud. I have encrypted some files and put them on the cloud and notice they cannot be opened until I move them back to my computer, (at least I can't open them until I move them).

I appreciate what you've said about the Apple designed security for the iOS devices. I don't think I gave that much thought before. But I still think the best option is to get files off my devices. Until now, that is what I've done. I haven't tried moving files via AirDrop or copying to my computer so I'll look into that.

Eventually, something is going to have to be done so we can get file off our devices easily.

There are a few special storage devices for mobile devices. There are portable, bulit-in WiFi hotspot hard drives for mobile devices made by Western Digital and Seagate.

I just checked out the sandisk and adanelements items you've suggested and they look promising, especially the adamelements item.

I have explored moving files via iCloud and that works ok. I noticed there seems to be something new within Pages. If I'm remembering correctly, a file can be moved directly from computer to iOS device through the share function, (Pages docs are what I'm most interested in getting off my devices). But I don't remember seeing a way to directly move files the other way from within the app, (iOS device to computer).

So far the thing I find most acceptable is moving files via the cloud then deleting them from devices/cloud I no longer want them on, the cloud becomes just a transfer device in this instance. Works for me, for now.
