Unable to create new character styles in pages

I have the latest version of pages v6.0.5 running OS Sierra on 15' macbook pro. In pages, the 'plus' sign on the top right of the create new character style tab is greyed out. The help section says that the plus can be used to define new styles but in practice, it's un-clickable. Please help.

MacBook Pro, iOS 10.2.1

"Here's what I found through some R&D.

"By default, the + sign in character styles will be greyed out.

"To enable it, do the following.

"Select any word. It’s default character style will be none. Change it to anything else. Then the + sign will get un greyed. Now use the newly created character style and redefine it based on your selected text.

"Hope this helps"
