Regrettably, a link to a site promoting the installation of "MacKeeper" has been posted to this Discussion. I strongly recommend that you do not do that. Besides stealing a liberal amount of original content from this author, its removal instructions just don't work. Like practically all "malware removal" sites returned by a web search, that example exists solely as a conduit to funnel money directly from you to its creator — in the exact same manner as "Safe Finder".
You do not need to download or install anything to fix it. Removing it requires a methodical approach because its name is always changing.
Navigate to the following folder, and post its contents in a screenshot.
~/Library/LaunchAgents
To open that folder, copy the entire line above and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field. It should look like this:
Take a screenshot showing all that folder's contents, and post it in a reply. To take a screenshot read the Appendix in the following User Tip: Writing an effective Apple Support Communities question.
There will be additional instructions to follow.
For a description of how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended actions read How to install adware. You may also wish to read Beware bogus Adobe Flash "installers" which lead down the same path. The only way to prevent installing adware is its recognition and avoidance.
Review your Gatekeeper settings: OS X : About Gatekeeper - Apple Support. Gatekeeper is designed to help prevent you from inadvertently installing garbage software.
Suggest you download and run MalwareBytes. Malwarebytes was developed by one of our own colleagues here in ASC. It gets rave reviews and is about the most proven anti-malware software for Mac.
You should only do Flash updates either through System Preferences > Flash Player or from Official Adobe site from now on.
Thank you, stedman1, for your advice. I downloaded Malwarebytes, followed directions which included restarting my iMac. Safari still came up with Safe Ware as a homepage. I went to Apple Support for Safari and went through the steps which included going to Safari preferences, then general, then Homepage, set to current page (which was the Apple Support page). I ran Malwarebytes and was informed that there was a new update. I installed the new update version 1.2.6. I ran the Malwarebytes again and it came up clean. Since I too downloaded a fake adobe flash ware I looked through the applications and saw an install adobe flash distinct from Adobe Reader 9 and sent it to trash. I changed the homepage to duckduckgo.com and I was back in business again.
Disclaimer: I am not a wiz at this. The order which I did things may not be perfectly accurate but the bottom line was after reading various apple discussions and lastly stedman1's I resolved the problem...I hope.
Hi I would use this app very cautiously, as it did remove malware, but then installed its own website onto my homepage, even though my homepage is still listed as google.com (in essence did the same thing as safe finder did the first time around)
Hi! Did you download the software recommended? Was it legit? Did it work?
after adobe update my safari shows me safe finder what is this
