I am having trouble changing my apple ID and I am about to cancel the email account that I originally used. When I tried to change it to my gmail account, I got a message saying that the email address is not available. Does that mean I can't use it or is there a problem with the system? Can I use my icloud address?

You can use an icloud address, but remember that if you do, you will not be able to change it; this is from the document linked to below:
If your email address ends with @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com, you might not be able to change your Apple ID. You also won't see Change Email Address on your account page.
Yes, you can definitily use gmail. But if you are having any probem then try this-

Have you used that gmail address previously for anything related to Apple?
If you're only going to use that address for Apple, how about you create a new gmail address to be used just for that? Or any other free online email provider?

As far an Apple ID is concerned the email address is simply a unique identifier. The email address doesn't have to be active and reachable, although that does make life easier if you need to reset your password. Existing content cannot be transferred to a new ID, and will still be available using the current user name and password. If you have any iOS devices it is worth noting that updating apps across multiple accounts is complicated. You may be better off sticking with the original Apple ID and adding a rescue address.

Thank you for that information. For some reason it won't let me change it to my iCloud address or my gmail address. I think I am going to have to make a trip to the Apple Store!!! GRRR!
Perhaps the address isn't available for use as a new Apple ID because you've already set it up? Can you gain access to it via https://iforgot.apple.com?

Would imply that you already used that address somehow.
I'd create a new gmail email account. You can go into gmail setting and have all your gmail forwarded to whatever account you want.

To be honest, I have no idea if I have or not. Your suggestion is a good one. I don't know if you can have more than one Gmail account but I will give it a go! Thanks so much!
