There are 2 sides to Java.

The web browser plug-in/extension - this is the BAD form, as it has been nothing but security holes. HOWEVER, for some reason there are a few institutions that require the Java browser plugin to access their web site. If can avoid them, all the better (if it is your Bank, consider changing banks 🙂 ).

The 2nd Java form is application programs written in Java. These programs are NOT a problem. They are no different than any other applications written in any other programming language. They are as good and secure as the programmers that wrote them, the same as any other application you install on your Mac.

If you are being prompted to install Java because you are trying to start an Application you installed, then as long as you like the App, then this is not a problem.

If you are being prompted to install Java because of a web site you are trying to access, this is a bad idea.
