WPA2 possible when AirPort Express is used as a client?

Hi,

A footnote (2) at http://www.apple.com/airport-express/specs/ indicates that AirPort Express supports only WPA-Personal when joining an existing wireless network. The AirPort Express 802.11n (1st Generation) - Technical Specifications (footnote 3) and AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) - Technical Specifications (footnote 2) contain the same information.

Is it at all possible to use WPA2 security when an AirPort Express is operating as a client (joining a wireless network)?

As a general rule of thumb, I would say that if the AiPort Express will be set up as a wireless Ethernet bridge with a network that is being provided by a 3rd party router, then I would expect the Express to always connect using WPA/WPA2 Personal.

It might connect using WPA2 Personal, but you will have to set this up manually to see if the WPA2 setting will "stick" after you make the changes to the Express.

If the network is being provided by a current or recent Apple AirPort router, then I would expect that the Express will automatically connect using WPA2 Personal.

Hi Jan!

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but here is what I've found......

If I set up an Airport Express to join or extend a network that is being provided by another Apple router that is using WPA2 Personal......the Express will set up automatically using WPA2 Personal.

If I set up an AirPort Express to join a third party network that is using WPA2 Personal......the Express will always set up automatically using WPA/WPA2 Personal.

If I manually change the setting on the Express to WPA2 Personal and click to Update using AirPort Utility, sometimes the Express will change to WPA2 Personal on some networks, and it will still remain at WPA/WPA2 Personal on other networks.

Hi Bob,

Many thanks for this information. I am in the process of comparing some wireless solutions (including wireless Ethernet bridge devices) for older Macintosh computers, but have not had access to the AirPort Express models in question for testing. Even though plain WPA often is quite sufficient (at least much better than WEP), the use of WPA2 security would be preferable, if at all possible.
