Strange, the reviews I read said just the opposite. First off, QT and iMovie use the same system structures (QT) for conversion and editing. So what applies to one also applies to the other. In this case neither support the import/editing of MPEG-2 compressed files in their normal configuration. You can, of course, purchase the QT MPEG-2 video component ($19.99) from Apple, but would probably only allow playback (probaby without audio), no editing (in MPEG2 format), and, at best, only allow conversion of video data to a fully supported QT compatible format. (iMovie only edits DV compressed files.)

If you already have the QT MPEG-2 component installed, you might try an MPEG based third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) for conversion to DV here. However, be advised that most reviews for this product indicate the MPEG-2 compression is non-standard and may or may not be recognized for conversion. In addition, at least one review indicated the FireWire connection was also "special" and it, as well as, the camerera may not be recognized by the computer unless the user employs "Movieshaker" (Sony's "consumer video editing software") or Pinnacle's Video Studeo, which I assume are PC oriented. In addition, at the time of the writing of this review, no MPEG-2 dedicated capture utilities (mostly PC) were compatible.

I use Sony DCR-IP1 on my macbook! In order to capture and convert this highly compressed format of video you basically need 2 things:1.An applicatopn called DVHSCap(you can find it from firewire SDK developer tools and download it) which manage to transfer via firewire the video and record it while playing it from the camcorder.2.An application called DropDV which is the most simple and easy way to convert the m2t file format into dv format and then you can easily handled it to whatever you want to.That's it!

Hi, you must be the only person on this planet who has a solution to my problem! I have SONY IP1E that I cannot use with my new iMAC. The instructions you have given re downloadimng files fom the developers toolkit seem fine, howvere I cannot find them anywhere. I have down loaded the firewire SDK 23 but there is no DVHSCap file? a search on the apple web site dose not find it either. Could you please let me have step by step instructiosn as to where to find them. Many Thank.

Ok ttrucwy you are getting very close to solve your MicroMV "MAC OS X no working mystery".First make sure you have the required hardware accessories which are the microMV dock station (included in your camcorder sale package) and the firewire cable called "SONY iLink" cable (NOT included). After downloading the SDK developer tools make sure you install it on your disk drive and look for the "Developer" directory.Open this directory and go to the "FireWireSDK23" subdirectory.Open it and go to "Applications" subdirectory where you will notice an application without an icon called "DVHSCap.app" you can drag it to your Applications folder for future use.Hope this will help you getting started it!

MicroMV is YAISSC , yet another Sony sole concept along with Mini Disc, Memory Stick Pro, ATRAC, Betamax, etc. A proper DV camera fully complaint and 21st century is so cheap just stop with the MicroMV and get a new camera. DV tape not a DVD or Hard Drive type or you will have a similar compatibility problem as they shoot in MPEG-2, at least a more standard version of it, a small saving grace.

Sony quit selling MicroMV in 1/2006 so follow their lead and switch.

MPEG Streamclip apparently deals with MicroMV if you can get it off the tape, see this site. And get a new camera.

I can stil use my Sony MicroMV IP1 camcorder device and I consider my self very lucky for finding it and buying it brand new!I had work with such a unique, sophisticated and so well-built video recording piece of art!Ok "Ricktoronto" find me a similar 1 MP camcorder from today's Sony products with 40.8 x 12.5 x 49,1 mm size and I will throw my camera to trash! This great product is also very good at showing video content to others because it uses a small LCD display with a 960 x220 resolution or 211.200 pixels! And works with microMV videocassettes which happens to be smaller than a mini DVD disc and have built-in memory for easy viewing. So you stil think that you can be such an ignorant and so simple to say " go get a new camera"?

OK, so you have small , nonconforming mediocrity. Great news. The fact is any MPEG-2 recorder is inferior (including DVD and HDD cameras) and there are loads of DV cameras that are very small , all have LCD and give yousuperior quality and more importantly compliance with your video editor.

In the meantime at least MPEG Streamclip can help you do basic capture and cuts and you can convert it to pretend DV to edit in iMovie or Final Cut. But it is not DV or even close.

Ok lets talk seriously and stop posting non-sense.Take this model of your favorite camcorders (from Sony series)DCR-HC96 MiniDV Handycam® CamcorderDCR-HC96 (seems the best from all the latest MiniDV's).If you know how to read you will see what the LCD resolution is 123K(aprox. half resolution of my mediocre IP1-E MicroMV 2003 model!).

Oh Yeah!So tell us "Ricktoronto" what do you do with your ultra advanced high tech MiniDV camera in order to transfer your super clear and ultra high resolution video to your Mac? I can expect that you get the job done only by pressing one button.Because I said that I get the jod done in two steps and you propose me to buy a new camera!
