MacBook Pro bluetooth issues when paired with Bose QC35 and Logitech MX Master Mouse

Hello,

I have the latest MacBook Pro with TouchBar, with all of the latest updates to macOS Sierra, etc.

I have a Logitech MX Master mouse that I paired to the MBP via bluetooth.

I have Bose QC35 headphones that I paired to the MBP via bluetooth.

If I am using just the mouse (with the headphones powered off), the mouse works fine. There is no noticeable lag, everything responds well. I don't have any issues with the mouse.

If I am using just the headphones (with the mouse powered off), the headphones work fine. Music plays perfect, no lag or stutters. I don't have any issues with the headphone.

However, if I want to listen to music on the MBP and still work with the mouse (so both the headphones and the mouse are powered on and connected via bluetooth), there is a noticeable lag in both the headphones and the mouse.

Music playing in the headphones is often choppy. It cuts in/out, and sometimes repeats a few seconds worth of the song. Makes it horrible to listen to.

Same goes for the mouse. It becomes laggy and unresponsive. Clicking will take sometimes over 10 seconds to work. Moving the cursor takes many seconds to refresh, so I end up jumping all over the screen. It. is basically unusable and I am forced to either use the trackpad or keyboard shortcuts.

If I power off either one of the devices, the other starts working perfectly. It is almost like the MBP cannot run both devices via bluetooth at the same time.

I am assuming this is not expected, and there should be ample processing power to run both seamlessly. Any one have any suggestions?

Sorry to say... this has been an issue with Mac OS X and seems to have been carried forward into macOS. I first noticed the problem with bluetooth audio dropouts (even without a mouse/keyboard) ever since I switched from Windows to a MacBook Pro in 2009.

On Windows systems as early as XP, I could use the built-in bluetooth card in my Tablet PC to listen to audio on my headphones, respond to type on my bluetooth keyboard, and draw with my bluetooth mouse, all without lag. An additional benefit is that when I received a call on my Windows Mobile phone, my headset automatically stopped the music on my computer to answer the call from my phone.

Since switching to the Mac and an iPhone, I find that the built-in bluetooth cards allow devices to be greedy and prefer to be the sole connection in use. Just as you noticed, devices work smoothly until you use an audio device. I searched for "Mac OS X bluetooth audio dropouts" and found numerous issues at the time. This problem even occurs on my updated 2015 MacBook Pro. The bluetooth pipe still doesn't seem big enough to manage the number of devices. Plus, even if I could listen to music on my new MacBook while working, the iPhone does not intercept the signal to take the call.

However, while I was at first disappointed at the reduced bluetooth functionality after switching to Mac, I learned to enjoy the power and reliability of the rest of the ecosystem. I think I'll try one of the other suggestions to add a different bluetooth device, and see if that works to improve performance.

I was having this exact same issue. I have a Macbook Pro (15-inch, 2016) with touch bar. I first noticed that I would lose connection to my mouse when I was using my Bose QC35s. I recently got a new set of AirPods and I was having the same issue. It was driving me crazy. As soon as I paused my music the connection would be reestablished with the mouse.

I finally bumped into this Forbes article (link below) today and it seems like it finally solved my issue. Unfortunately I can't use the handoff feature on my Mac anymore but it's definitely less of a problem than not being able to wear bluetooth headphones and use a bluetooth mouse at the same time (I'm using the Logitech MX Master mouse). I hope Apple jumps on this issue and fixes soon. This was SO annoying. I've been struggling with this issue for MONTHS.

Fix: Basically you just have to go to System Preferences -> General -> Uncheck "Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices"

The problem you are having is that the mac Bluetooth can't use both at the same time and is meant to only have one device connected at a time, try going and getting a wireless keyboard with a USB bluetooth piece to connect it to your computer. But overall your mac can't connect to two bluetooth devices at the same time.

I'm having the same issue, different hardware though

MacBook Pro 15'' 2017 Touchbar + Logitech MX Master + Plantronics BackBeat Pro.

This is insane!!! I had absolutely no issues with the same peripherals and my previous Macbook Pro 2014 model. Instead of advancing, it seems to be going back :/ Sad thing!

Also, this is an almost $3,000 computer!!! How is this even an issue?

Is there anyone from Apple willing to give us an answer?
