Imessage not recognizing other iphone

Why is my daughters iphone not recognizing me or my wife's iphone as having imessage on? Also both me and wife iphone will not recognize her phone as having imessage on. But all three phones will recognize and imessage any other contact in our contacts list. My son's phone is the only one out of the four that is able to send an imessage to anyone on his contacts list. I have tried turning on and off imessage on the phones, making sure that an email address is not being used as contact source, the phone number is the only one being used in all three phones and has a check mark by it, deleted any texts started prior to turning on imessage, deleted contact information and tried just sending text to the number only.

I guess what I was trying to ask is that why would an iphone need to have an email address as a contact source? I know that when my kids were younger, I would have to logged them into their ipods with an email address so that they could use imessage and facetime. Of course, they would only be able to do anything if they were on wifi.

Thanks.
