Using a transition template and creating a video

I've got a transition that I have downloaded, and I want to use part of it to create a video to put into a sports video to show highlights through the game.

I'm wanting to use the 2nd part of the transition to frame the video. Is it possible to create this if so, how?

Ok - Thanks! I wanted to see how it presented.

I will assume that this is a "traditional" FCPX transition where you actually drop the effect on the edges of two adjacent clips...

That will mean that the section of the animation you want begins with two sides of the "sign" frame come in from either side of the canvas to meet in the middle... You're looking at some serious surgery. You will have to extract (copy) the Transition B section of the animation and paste it into a new project. You can choose either a Title or a Generator (probably a generator).

The first thing you're going to want to do is duplicate the Transition project; in case something goes wrong, you don't want to bash the original.

If you get the "B side" of the transition working in the new project, your next step would be to strip out any default animation (find red parameters and Reset them). Make sure all the pieces fit back together. Once you get it set up and stable, publish the effect to FCPX. If the inset screen drop zone is NOT one of the Transition A/B drop zones, it will simplify what you need to do immensely! You can just copy out the content you need to another project.

If the drop zone is actually the Transition B (or A) drop zone, you will have to convert that to a different new drop zone. (The MotionVFX drop zone is just a holder image -- don't worry if that "goes away" -- if you know how, you can replace it in the new Drop Zone -- otherwise, it really doesn't matter what the DZ looks like.) You will probably have to deal with masking shapes... if you're setting both sides together without animation, the masking can be removed (or replaced with a single mask if you need to fit the image into that frame) and you won't need that "fusion" light effect in the center.

Without actually having a copy of the effect, I can't really be more specific (at this point). If you run into problems, post back and try to include screencaps of the pertinent information you need help with (layers, parameters, canvas shots if necessary).

You should be able to make the conversion, just be prepared to spend a little time to do some work.
