How To Fix A Corrupt iPod

Okay, this is my first and possibly last post here, I just thought that I should write my solution to this problem as there are a lot of people suffering with a corrupt iPod. I will first recommend you read this topic also if you're still having problems

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3639883&#3639883

This will be a long post (sorry), so I'll break things up into an EXPLANTION of the problem and the SOLUTION as I think some people will be thankful for a bit of insight and some people just want a solution.
read on...

EXPLANATION:
My problem occured when receiving a second hand iPod, it had some bugs, stutters and general problems so I tried a restore, this is where my real problems started. After the restore music would not always copy correctly to the iPod, some times returning with a "Windows Delayed Write Failure", also some songs and videos would not play sometimes requiring a restart (reset), sometimes they would return me to the menu straight, and sometimes they would play fine. Also the hard disk would make a lot of fuss just to select certain songs or videos, I would even have trouble booting the iPod or detecting in iTunes.
These things led me to believe either: The hard disk was cactus; The hard disk had bad sectors; Or there was a file system error on the hard disk.
When the iPod got really bad it wouldn't properly detect in iTunes, iPod Access, Anapod or Windows, it wouldn't restore in iTunes, and I couldn't access it through windows explorer even in disk mode as it claimed the disk or the control folder had corrupted.
Using some diagnostic tools I discovered the problem was nothing more than a simple and easily fixed FAT32 filesystem error.
The problem is that the iPod uses a FAT32 filesystem which is a 'kind of unstable' but not yet redundant filesystem we used back in the Windows 98 days, I assume it uses this filesystem for compatability reasons as pretty much any pc with Windows 98 or above can access FAT32.
FAT32 stores files in chains, linking one file to another, and branching out like a tree, this system is very easily corruptable due to anything from bad shutdowns or yanking the dock cable of the iPod during copying.

SOLUTION:
1:(optional) Check your iPod by reseting it and when the apple logo first appears hold the middle select button and the rewind button to enter a diagnostic mode. Then press the menu button to enter manual testing. Scroll down to IO and press select, then select the hard disk option, then select the hard disk specs option. Read the data to check your hard disk is detected as the correct size (30Gb in my case), if it isn't then reset the iPod and repeat this step until the hard disk detects as the correct size.

2:Reset your iPod, as the apple logo appears hold down the middle select button and the play button, it will then boot to a screen with a tick in the middle and it will say Disk Mode along the top of the screen.

3: Now load iTunes and then plug the iPod into your computer and let it detect. iTunes should detect your iPod though it may not properly detect it. If iTunes doesn't detect an iPod AT ALL then reset your iPod and repeat steps 2 & 3 until it does.

4: Now your iTunes should display your iPod or an iPod just call IPOD, click on your iPod and restore, you can use the same version software or update - it doesn't matter. Even if your iPod normally recieves an error when retoring it SHOULD restore as long as you're in disk mode. When it is done restoring DO NOT UNPLUG THE IPOD, just let iTunes redetect it.

5: Now go to My Computer and right click on your iPod (could be called Removable Disk and go to properties. Now click on the tools tab and run Scandisk (Check Disk). In the scandisk box that opens tick both check boxes (fix automatically and surface scan) and click run, this will take a while but when it's done go to iTunes and eject the iPod, unplug it from the computer, and reset it.
You have jsut fixed your iPod.

Please if you use this solution and it works for you, post your thanks or comments so I know my time wasn't wasted writing this.
thankyou

I've been putting a few movies on mine using different software (just to convert movies etc., a program somewhat like super) and my ipod brand new (80 gb, just got on Christmas) and it works perfectly, however after I loaded 18 videos on it, 6 of which were movies when I booted it up, and it said, "update done....ok etc." I could take out the ipod but then the screen went black on it and the apple icon popped up. What could've been the cause of this? Is it a one time thing. Personally I thought it's because I had put too many videos on it at one time. That's the first time its ever done that.

KYLO4:
I have to stress the importance of EJECTING your iPod before you unplug it from your machine, in the left source pane of iTunes next to where it says "your iPod" there is an eject button, there is also one in the lower right of the iTunes windows. This is very important as it reduces the chance of *bad mojo* occuring on your precious new iPod. Additionally you can use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your windows system tray, but I still recommend Ejecting it through iTunes first.
This may have been your problem. Then again, different people have different problems in iTunes, I for one haaven't had a problem (or heard of one) regarding too many videos or anything on an iPod yet so don't stress, Eject.

JF08:
This post was a little vague, but I'll try...
It is absolutely crucial to boot your iPod into Disk Mode before performing these operations. It is just as important to make sure that your iPod's hard drive is being detected at it's correct size using the built in diagnostics.
You can also try booting your pc into safe mode to try and rule out a software glitch, but keep in mind that some operations can't be performed in safe mode.
If you could post a little more detail about your exact problem I should be able to help a little more, but please make sure you've followed all the steps first, including the diagnostics step.

J_HOOK:
Sometimes quite a while but no more than a few minutes, if it doesn't detect atl all just use the safely remove hardware icon to stop the ipod and pull the plug, then reset iTunes and the iPod. I prefer to load iTunes THEN plug he iPod in. If your iPod won't detect properly then it's just down to resetting the ipod and/or iTunes until it does. Remember: Don't just yank out the iPod dock cable if you can eject it first somehow.

PURPLE_HAZE:
Maybe this is another one for safe mode, try it. Just boot into safe mode, boot your iPod into disk mode and try that, you never know.
But this does sound like the computers fault if this happens with other stuff as well, You could run XP over your machine again or try something like FreshUI to manage hiddem drive letters, though I don't think that FreshUI will help much, it's worth a go.

Luck last for the day...
Yeah, look, those exclamation marks are iTunes' way of saying "I can't find that song, I put it here but it's gone". If resetting your iPod (a few times) doesn't work, try a scandisk on it for filesystem errors, don't forget to boot the iPod into disk mode, IF THAT doesn't work then do a scandisk surface scan (for bad sectors, you don't know your luck).
IF THAT doesn't work and iPod access OR Anapod won't back your music up then I'd have to say... sorry there's not much else to do but start again. Don't worry, it pains ME to say that, but try to take comfort in the fact that your music's well and truly stuffed and no amount of work (probably) would bring it back. I can't guarantee that it's unrecoverable, but there is limits on what I can (or will) do over a forum, so yeah, time to bite the bullet and restore.
-very sorry

odsmart, thank you for answering! Yes, every time I press the eject button in itunes and then go to safely remove hardware. The time that happened I had ejected it, went to go safely remove hardware, that icon was not there, I looked at the ipod and it had the black screen with the apple logo on it. Maybe it was just a one time thing because the ipod works perfectly.

Hi odsmart. I am having a terrible time synching my ipod and I don't know if you can help me, but I thought I would ask. For the last several times that I have synched it, I get (-69) errors. I have sought answers on this board and followed their advice and painstakingly was able to synch my ipod after clearing 20+songs from it. However, it now will not synch my photos. Actually, in synched them earlier tonight, and then I added a few more, and it gave me the (-69) message again. I tried removing the most recently added photos, and still nothing. I restored the entire ipod, and still I get the same error message.

I have had the ipod for about a year and just started having this trouble about two weeks ago. I actually tried the solution you gave, but I can't even get my ipod to go into disk mode. I have tried several times and after resetting it always just opens at the normal screen.

I am about at my wits end here and ready to toss the entire thing. I don't know if you can help, but I would appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you in advance, if for nothing else than for taking the time to read this novel of an e-mail.

Hi Odsmart,

I bought an Apple ipod Video yesterday and appear to be having technical problems with it already. I have looked through the entire site for troubleshoot purposes but have not found what I was looking for. The problem with my ipod Video is my itunes program will not allow me to switch to manually managing music and the program freezes & crashes. It comes with an error message saying 'could not update Saman's ipod. Unknown error: (-50). I have tried to restore my settings on my itunes program but it will not allow me, the program freezes and crashes and comes up with the same error message.Unknown error: (-50).

I have a 30GB 5th Gen Ipod. I have tried everything in this post and can't get it to work properly.

When I check the hard disk it gives me a hd size of 96GB and large numbers in the temp. When I scandisk or format, the computer does nothing.

I have restored it several times (in different computers) and still get the corrupt ipod message and the computer asks me to restore it, but right after the process I get the sad ipod icon. Once in a while the ipod works.
Even though I restored it multiple times I still have all the songs.

What should I do? Do you think I should send it in for repair?
