Web site statisics software

Hi all,

Im looking for a free or cheap bit of software that will give stats on my web server, the usual stuff, who, when, how much data and so on...

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Depends on whether you want to run it on your mac (she's your webserver, right?), or have an outside service do it for free.

StatCounter is good
http://www.statcounter.com/
so is gemstats
http://www.gemstats.com/
Both external. You register, and paste a bit of code in your pages where instructed.

Webalizer and awstats both run on your webserver:
http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/
http://awstats.sourceforge.net/
I've run all four of these. AWstats was the hardest
for me to configure. Webalizer was easier.
These local ones pull stats right out of your APache logs, and format them attractively for display in your browser.

The external ones are easy, but statcounter is limited unless you pay for extra storage (you'll see).
Gemstats is OK. That was the first one I used.

You can use more than one, I think.

Googlwe has the best external service... and for now its free... although still in "Beta" of course i think google is redefining the term Beta to meanwe jsut dont want to offer you support... But yeah Google ANalytics is awesome. It uses Urchin at its core i think which google purchased not too long ago.

Which leads me to my "on-server" reccommend... Urchin. Urchin isnt free though i dont think. You have to pay for a license i beleive. but that could have changed. I have an older release on my home machine actually as i wanted to play with it a bit.
