Purge inactive Memory

When I run the etrecheck program I always get the error:

[failed] com.maintain.PurgeInactiveMemory.plist (2017-01-13)

I am also still have my screen going black and then having to restart.

I wonder if this is my problem and how I might correct it.

Thanks

Dan

The .plists are generally in one of 3 directories

  • /Library/LaunchDaemons
  • /Library/LaunchAgents
  • ~/Library/LaunchAgents (the first character is tilda ~ and represents your home directory)

you can use Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder to get to any of these directories

NOTE: Generally speaking, the volunteers helping in the forums do not like memory cleaners, Mac cleaners, nor anti-virus packages, as they tend to cause more problems then they solve.

Get rid of "Cocktail" as well as any memory "cleaners". Uninstall those products according to their respective instructions.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or macOS are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent macOS's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

Here is the etreCheck from a few minutes ago. Showing there is not enough available memory

Earlier today I ran tech tool and it shows there is nothing wrong with my memory. My iMac has 16 gigabytes of memory. The activity monitor shows that I have these programs running: safari MS outlook, etrecheck, and the activity monitor

EtreCheck version: 3.1.5 (343)

Report generated 2017-02-27 13:08:03

Clooged up means that I have 16 Gig of memory and can't load the operating system but when I I shutdown my iMac. Shutoff the power cord for a few minutes, and restarted clearing the pram all the red errors went away.

"That Mac is a mess of utterly useless "anti-virus" and "cleaning" garbage. Fix it by uninstalling all that junk."

Perhaps you could point out the antivirus and cleaning stuff. That might be more helpful than telling me to fix all the junk. I am not aware of any anti-virus or cleaning stuff.

Feb 27, 2017 1:20 PM in response to DanMccarter

I am not aware of any anti-virus or cleaning stuff.

"Cocktail" and "TechTool" are one of many worthless "maintenance" utilities. "F-Secure" is an equally worthless non-Apple "anti-virus" product.

As long as they remain installed it is unreasonable to expect that Mac to operate properly. If you don't know how they came to be installed on that Mac no one else can possibly know.

When I installed "F-Secure" for evaluation purposes some time ago I used its uninstaller utility, which was included with its downloaded installer. They were both installed in Applications. It's a moot point though, since using that uninstaller was ineffective at eradicating its components from the sacrificial Mac on which it was installed, a typical characteristic of a poorly conceived product. The recourse in such cases is to restore from a Time Machine backup, which your report indicates spans a period of less than one full day. Since you have no memory of having installed those products, that TM backup is unlikely to contain a backup created prior to that time.

As a rule I do not permit my Macs to become corrupted with such junk, and in your case I recommend that you completely erase that Mac and reconfigure it from the ground up. When doing so, do not reinstall the junk. "Junk" in this context is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

I suggest you refer to Effective defenses against malware and other threats. Excerpted from it:

Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don't want it any more.

Feb 27, 2017 1:49 PM in response to DanMccarter

Everything John Galt mentioned. You have so much junk on your Mac, it isn't even slightly surprising how it runs and that it's constantly out of RAM. Remove every single bit of:

Cocktail

TechTool Pro (a monstrous hog of both RAM and disk space)

F-Secure

Totally, 100%, USELESS! Remove PhoneClean, which will then also remove the constantly running process launched by com.imobie.silentcleanserver.plist. There is absolutely nothing beneficial about this app. Not even for free.

Feb 27, 2017 5:15 PM in response to DanMccarter

When apps you are running (or the 3rd party background additions you have added) consume too much memory, macOS will start to kill off some of its launch agents and daemons to free up more memory for your use. The agents and daemons can be restarted if they are needed, it will just take longer for them to respond, than if they are ready and waiting.

Perhaps you could point out the antivirus and cleaning stuff. That might be more helpful than telling me to fix all the junk. I am not aware of any anti-virus or cleaning stuff.
