It should, and seeking the workaround you propose would amount to addressing a symptom of a problem instead of fixing it.
Please reset that Mac's SMC according to Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.

Have you got the small battery icon working in your menu bar? It then only requires a casual glance to check its charge level.
There doesn't seem to be a way. Same goes for iPhone/iPad, where I'd like the option to remove the warning as it often interrupts something I'm doing. I've sent feedback to Apple about this.
