DVD player resolution?

OK, so i'm about to pick up a 34" Sony HD tube tv that can play up to 1080i. I've never hooked up an external display to my MBP, but I assume I would "Detect Display" and then pick the resolution (1080). Can the DVD Player software up convert the signal? I want to hook my MBP to the tv via a DVI > HMDI cable and was wondering what kind of resolution I can expect playing dvd's (420, 1080 etc).

thanks

so there's no upconvert options in the DVD Player software on the mac? That would be a nice little update!

guess i'll have to replace my dvd player with one that upconverts to 1080i.

of course, upconverting from 420 to 1080 wouldn't increase the quality of the picture, right? that's kinda of like trying to burn a 64 kb song to 192, no noticable increase.
