5.1 Won't capture from DSR-11

i just finished upgrading from final cut 4.5 to 5.1 and now final cut won't capture from my dsr-11

if i select "log and capture" and push play i don't get a picture up, but the TC starts to roll, so i can control the deck with final cut but i still can't capture...

When i go into "audio/video settings" and select "A/V devices" i see "(missing) apple firewire pal (720 x 576)

i've tryed restarting the computer and re-connecting the fire wire cable but nothing is happening...

any ideas of what might be wrong ?

Update your system to QT 7.1.3, and OS 10.4.8 if you haven't already.

Reinstalling QT might help.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852 is Apple's article on the issue.

If this fails, then resetting your PMU button (found on the motherboard under the fan that you remove to reveal the RAM chips) can restore FW connections. You have to unplug the Mac from power entirely to do this...

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.

This is how:

Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg

Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.

Run the Quicktime installer.

Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)

Reboot

Good luck.

(Iceland is about the most beautiful place I have ever been or seen. I hope to return one day.)

Welcome to the forum. You might have to reinstall quicktime to fix this. Search this forum for the instructions. sometimes when upgrading between versions the QT installation gets ruined.

It's never happened to me so I've not got the procedure down, but the answer is here on the forum. Just use the search window.

Hey Pipar, just curious,
I'm probably goin to buy a deck soon to capture footage and Noticed that you purchased A Dsr-11. I know nothing about capture decks, what can it do as far as capturing footage that a cheap camcorder can't do? Again I'm asking because I have no clue. Also, are you pleased with it? Thanks

I've been running a DSR-11 for DV material for 5 years now. what it does is a couple of things. It searches tape 10 times faster, and it lives a LOT longer. cheap DV camera's motors wear out in no time. A deck is made to shuttle tapes around, and a camera isn't.

DSR-11's are a bargain tape deck.. very sturdy machines. They also play PAL tapes FWIW....

im very pleased with it...my deck is 5 years old and has never failed me, but im thinking of getting the playheads changed soon so it won't start failing me...hehe

I use it to capture footage so i don't have to tear up my camera's and too connect my vcr and monitor through
