iMac does not recognize external CD drive

I have an iMac running OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan). When I plug in my Apple external CD/DVD drive, the drive does not show on the desktop or in the sidebar.

I have already done the following:

  • Made sure that external disks, hard disks, CDs, DVDs are all checked in my Finder "General" preferences.
  • Made sure that hard disks, external disks, CDs, and DVDs are all checked in the "Sidebar" section of the Finder preferences.
  • Checked in Disk Utility. What shows up there is "Apple UDIF read-only compressed (bzip2) Media" -- something that does not make sense to me.

I last used the external hard drive a couple of months ago to burn some CDs and had no trouble at that time.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I don't think that is the case. Any, anyway — the drive does not show even when I insert a disk. I have tried inserting both blank disks and disks with content.

I woudn't expect to see the drive itself until a disk with some readable content has been inserted into it.
