iMac does not recognize external CD drive

I have an iMac running OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan). When I plug in my Apple external CD/DVD drive, the drive does not show on the desktop or in the sidebar.

I have already done the following:

Made sure that external disks, hard disks, CDs, DVDs are all checked in my Finder "General" preferences.
Made sure that hard disks, external disks, CDs, and DVDs are all checked in the "Sidebar" section of the Finder preferences.
Checked in Disk Utility. What shows up there is "Apple UDIF read-only compressed (bzip2) Media" -- something that does not make sense to me.

I last used the external hard drive a couple of months ago to burn some CDs and had no trouble at that time.

Any ideas?

I don't think that is the case. Any, anyway — the drive does not show even when I insert a disk. I have tried inserting both blank disks and disks with content.
