iTunes Playlist Icon Question

Sometimes an icon appears to the left of a song title, and it looks like a circle with an exclamation point inside it. What is it and why does it appear? When this icon appears I can't play that song.

I am using the most current version of iTunes.

Thanks, Mark

Hi turingtest2, and thanks for the quick reply!

But wow! That new link you sent me seems pretty involved! It doesn't seem like a "simple fix" to me. By "simple fix" I was thinking of something like downloading a different version or something along those lines. For me, with as little knowledge of computers and iTunes inner workings as I have, I feel I am bound to make a mistake and screw things up even more. I certainly don't want to lose any songs I have purchased, or any I have uploaded from old CDs.

So, let me ask you... Can I just keep doing what I said I am currently doing, and get the same result.....which is to (hopefully) no longer get those circles, and every song will play like it should? I am familiar with what I am doing now and I don't mind it talking a long time if it means not losing any songs.

Just so you know, what I have also started today, is writing down every song title and album that gets the circle, because of the last couple/three days it seems like the same album titles are the ones affected.

Thanks again for all your help.

OK, I am now even MORE confused than I normally am when it comes to computer advice! 🙂

I am embarrassed to ask this, but when you say "I can run my script" are you referring to YOUR script, or something that actually says "my script"?? And, when you say it's easy to download, where is it EXACTLY so I can double-click on it? I looked over your latest link and I don't see what I am normally used to seeing.......a link that is underlined and in the color blue.

I feel I am really highlighting how stupid I am when it comes to computers! 🙂

It's going on 3:25pm PST now, and I have to leave by 3pm. So, if I don't hear from you again today we will have to continue this discussion tomorrow.

Yes. I am running in automatic mode. Say, when the last box popped up it said something about the Bee Gees at the top of the box, but in the next paragraph it was talking about connecting to "More Than A Feeling" by Boston. It is not connecting these two to each other is it?

Also, will I be able to locate a future song in the same locations as before so I can back it up with my flash drive? Or will my iTunes files be different after running this script.

OK thanks, I am going to start listening to my playlist. 🙂

I buy a few songs every first of the month and the last time I backed up using my flash drive was March 1st. But, I backed up only the songs I bought. I don't think I have ever backed up my entire playlist at one sitting. By that I mean that I started using iTunes in 2009 at my daughter's suggestion. I uploaded all the CDs I had making my first playlist. After that I started buying songs once a month from iTunes and uploading other CDs from my family that I liked and borrowed. I never backed up at first until one time when my computer crashed. I called iTunes and they helped me get all my songs back. Since then I started backing up the songs I bought onto a CD first, and in the last few years I've been backing up the songs I bought onto a flash drive.

So what happens now? Why did you say eek? Is this as bad as I think it is, or can you help me fix this?

What are the two options for SyncToy?

Another way to ensure that all files that are in the media folder are added to the library is a tool called iTunes Folder Watch. It has an optional feature to check for dead tracks on start up, which may sometimes be helpful in clearing broken links, but doesn't help much if there is still a chance of repairing them. It would at least indicate the size of the problem.

I don't think our replies are in sync. Sorry. I have been replying right away without waiting for an answer. Please read everything I have said that you haven't answered yet and reply. Hopefully this will get us on the same page.

I just tried to include a screenshot of the Sync Toy options that it is asking for, but it wouldn't let me. It said there was a problem.

Also, I have been going down my playlist (still in "A") that has a circle next to it, and I have been locating each one to get it to play, but NONE of them so far have a duplicate song above or below it! I thought you said I would have duplicates now?

OK, before I replied to your answer above I got another reply from you. I am really getting over run with multiple suggestions that I don't fully understand. So please, lets stop right now, try to answer everything I have asked, and then pick one course of action for me to go with. I feel totally overloaded with gobbledygook.

I'm going to deal with this post first and then track back with anything that I've still overlooked.

A description of the text will probably be enough. I'm fairly familiar with the options of the program. For best results attaching a screenshot here give the file a simple name like Image1.jpg and use the camera tool in the editor to attach it.

How is the playlist sorted? By artist, album, song name? If you link Song A (missing) to Song B using the script then the entry in the library takes on all the properties of the tag for Song B. Any duplicates created by this process will be wherever Song B is in each case, and Song A will no longer be listed in the library.

I do apologise. I am somewhat at a loss trying to understand why things have gone wrong for you and I am trying my best to get things back on track.

I've had a quick scan through the previous posts and I think I have covered all of the questions you've asked so far. If you could perhaps supply the three data points regarding the location of the media folder and details surrounding a missing track I can can then consider that information and either ask for more data or make a proposal as appropriate.

Hi, OK...

#1. I still can figure out how to insert the screenshot of Sync Toy on this page, but it is asking me which box to select: One that's 2.9 MB or the one that's 3.5 MB?

#2. My Playlist is sorted according to song name from A to Z. I am currently in the "A"s and moving down the list to the next circle. None of these songs with the circle have a duplicate song above or below them. I don't completely understand your A to B explanation. Are you saying any duplicate song could be anywhere on my playlist now?

#3. No apologies necessary, and I understand (and appreciate) that you are trying to solve my problem.

#3A. Question: I had an iTunes problem last Fall and a guy named James took over my computer and told me on the phone what to do and where to go. Can you do the same thing?

#4. Sorry, I'm lost again: "If you could perhaps supply the three data points regarding the location of the media folder and details surrounding a missing track I can can then consider that information and either ask for more data or make a proposal as appropriate."

Finally, back to your reply with all the step by step graphs. I started to try that and I only got as far as your step number two before I had questions: Step #1: What do you want me to do in step one after I "click the advanced tab"? Step #2: do you want me to click "OK"? I didn't get any further.

Finally (again)... I have to leave by 3pm PST so anything you want me to do will probably have to be done tomorrow unless it won't take very long. Besides being computer illiterate I can only type with two fingers which takes time for me to reply.

Don't think for a second that I don't appreciate all your help because I DO! Things just went south today and I think we both got a little rattled......mostly me. 😉 So, I am hoping you will not give up on me and that we can solve my problem, including the one that happened today.

Just remember: For me, simple, clear, and concise "Dick & Jane" language is a good thing for me to understand. 🙂

Hi turingtest2,

Here are my replies to your last post:

#1. I believe I have a 64-bit system so I will chose that on Sync Toy. But, since I have already backed up all of my songs over the years, do I really need to back up my playlist? I mean, what is left to back up?

#2. You're right. In my playlist's artist column under Boston I have three duplicated songs. Do you need to know what they are?

#3. OK no problem.

#4. I was able to perform the first two steps, but I still have questions about step 3. For step 1 the path is: C:\users\Mark\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music. For step 2 the path is: file://localhost/C:/users/Mark/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Compilations/International Superhits/05 Basket Case.m4a. For step 3: Look for which file? Do I have to use Windows Explorer or can I use my Google Chrome? What do you mean by including "the full path"? And finally, aren't the "file names similar to your example" one or both of the file names I have provided above? Please explain in detail.

Mark
