No longer getting audible notifications of messages

iPhone 6, iOS 10.2, iWatch. No matter what I do, I can no longer get an audible notification for a text with the Note sound. Have mirrored and unmirrored iWatch, have done a hard reset, have prowled lots of sites. I basically need a good sound to wake me up when I get paged to the hospital at night.

ANyone else having this problem?

iPhone 6, iOS 10.2.1

Until there is a way to mirror custom SMS notification sounds to the watch, I have literally been missing responding to texts because e-mails and everything else is "the same beep".

I could not get the suggestions here to work. Here is my work around for now.

I went to the Watch app, My Watch, Notifications, Messages.

Changed from Mirror my iPhone to custom notifications.

Unchecked show alerts.

Yes now my watch doesn't "notify me" when a text message comes in any more. But now my phone always goes off with my per-contact sounds like it is supposed to, and if I want to use my watch to see what message just came in, I just leave Messages docked (My Watch, Dock, Favorites instead of Recents, Messages at the top).

This is not quite as convenient as being able to "raise to see" texts as they come in, but FAR better than missing texts completely, which is what was happening.

This is not a good solution for someone who frequently uses their Apple Watch away from their phone, because now you've just told it not to notify you of Messages.

I pretty much always have my phone, I just wanted the convenience of Messages without digging the phone out of my pocket, plus I already have a well-established set of custom notification sounds for knowing who a Message is from and responding with according urgency (or not) due to the notification sound.

Hi

How notifications behave depends on the status of your devices and your settings. With Wrist Detection enabled, in order to bring notifications to your attention as soon as possible:

  • If your iPhone is unlocked, you will receive notifications on your iPhone instead of on your watch.
  • If your iPhone is locked or asleep and your watch is unlocked (regardless of whether the watch screen is asleep or awake) and on your wrist, you will receive notifications on your watch.
  • If your watch is locked or has Do Not Disturb enabled, notifications will go to your iPhone.
  • More information: Notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Note also that is not possible to customise alert tones on Apple Watch.

If your Apple Watch is not behaving as expected, the following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Check your settings:

  • Check that Do Not Disturb mode is not enabled on your watch:
    • When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up to open Control Centre.
    • Tap the Do Not Disturb button (crescent moon icon) to toggle the setting on / off.
  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Sounds & Haptics:
    • Check that the Alert Volume is towards the centre or right hand side;
    • Check that Silent Mode is not enabled;
    • Check that Haptic Strength is set to the middle or far right hand side of the slider.
  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Messages:
    • Perhaps choose Custom and check - under Alerts - that Show Alerts, Sound and Haptic are each enabled.

Restart both your iPhone and your watch, turning both devices off together, then restarting your iPhone first:

Unpair and re-pair your watch:
