CleanMyMac3 Notification still pops up

So basically, as stupid of a person I am, I downloaded Clean My Mac 3 almost a year ago. When I realized it was no help, I completely uninstalled it. But what I have seen recently, is that sometimes I get a notification at the top right of my screen saying something along the lines of "Launch Clean My Mac 3 to clean your macbook" and when I click open, nothing happens. I was wondering if there was any way to disable this notification, as it is quite annoying.

Most likely, that notification is being caused by a phony "Flash Player Updater" window or popup. Read Beware bogus Adobe Flash "installers". They are scams. Read the following to get rid of it.

Any number of scam products claiming to "clean" your Mac of adware is responsible for that nag. They don't work anyway. Their only apparent purpose is to extort money from you, one of many common Internet scams. The only way to avoid succumbing to those scams is to think before you click. Please read Effective defenses against malware and other threats.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

The key to terminating those nags is to identify the responsible process and kill it, followed by removing the launch agents that spawn their appearance again upon logging in. To do that read below. If you have questions regarding a file you're not sure about removing, please ask.

  1. Use Activity Monitor to determine if an process named "Advanced Mac Cleaner" or "Mac Adware Cleaner" is running.
    • If so, locate its corresponding app in your Mac's Applications folder and drag it to the Trash.
    • If a window appears harassing you to purchase it, select "No Thanks". Another window may open when you do that, pleading for you to reconsider. Just close it. Do the same if a browser window opens.
  2. If necessary, use Activity Monitor's View menu > Quit Process. Select Force Quit.
  3. Then, hold an Option key while selecting the Finder's Go menu. Select Library. Locate any folders bearing the following names, and drag them to the Trash. Not all of them may be present.
    • Advanced Mac Cleaner
    • Mac Adware Cleaner
    • hlpramc
    • hlprawc
  4. Then, locate the LaunchAgents folder, and open it. Inside there may be files containing the name adwarecleaner, jdibackup, hlpramc or hlprawc. Not all may be present. Drag all of them to the Trash, and empty the Trash.

Removing all its remnants is optional. If you wish to do that, continue below.

  1. Return to the Library folder (you can use the "back arrow" button to do that). Open the Application Support folder and open it. Locate any folders with the following names, and drag them to the Trash:
    • amc
    • awc
    • Advanced Mac Cleaner
    • Mac Adware Cleaner (You will be asked to authenticate).
  2. Then, return to the Library folder again (back arrow), and open the folder named Preferences. Locate all files containing the names Mac Adware Cleaner, adware, adwarecleaner or pcvark, and drag them to the Trash.
  3. Return to the Library folder again (back arrow), and open the folder named Logs. Locate all files containing the names Advanced Mac Cleaner, Mac Adware Cleaner, hlpramc, hlprawc, and drag them to the Trash.
  4. Return to the Library folder again, and open the folder Saved Application State. Locate all folders containing the names pcvark, Advanced Mac Cleaner, or Mac Adware Cleaner, and drag them to the Trash.
  5. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > select your User Account > Login Items. Select any items named Advanced Mac Cleaner or Mac Adware Cleaner, and click the [—] (minus) button to delete the now nonexistent programs from your Login Items.
  6. Log out or restart your Mac.

Hello mathnerd325,

Yes. There is a way to disable it. The question is, how much of a "nerd" are you? This will involve the Terminal and some low-level database commands. If you want to try, I'll tell you what to do.

For background, this sounds very much like what I discovered with the "MacReviver" program. MacReviver would fill up your location notification queue with ads. Even after you uninstalled the program, macOS would continue to deliver the ads. They had cleverly enlisted Apple as the ad delivery medium. CleanMyMac may be doing the same thing now. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to clean out the notification queue.

Did I mention you will need a Time Machine backup? 🙂
