Snapchat Notifications on Watch

Is it possible to receive snapchat notifications on the apple watch without having banners turned on? I currently have my phone set up to show an app badge and to vibrate or play a sound when receiving a new snapchat but have banner alerts turned off. I was hoping that this would be mirrored on my series 2 watch but that doesn't seem to be the case. It appears that I have to have the banner notification turned on to receive them on my watch. Is there a way to work around this? I found the banners intrusive on the phone.
